Who may say what

For prepacked food the operator under whose name or business name the food is placed on the market (normally the EU-established producer or brand owner) is responsible for the food information, and for food from third countries the importer is; that operator is the one named on the label.

The mandatory food information must be written in Croatian and in Latin script (Zakon o informiranju potrošača o hrani, Art. 3(2)); other languages may be added, and official control is shared by the agriculture and health ministries and the State Inspectorate.

Food business operators may use nutrition and health claims only as the rulebook allows and must be able to prove them scientifically; health claims needed notification to the Ministry of Health by a business registered in Croatia, and drinks over 1.2% vol. alcohol may carry no health claims.
